At the end of September in China it were presented three frameless smartphone Vivo X20, X20 and X20 Plus. Despite the fact that they are positioned as inexpensive alternatives to Galaxy S8 from Samsung, they look more like a cross between LG G6 and Apple iPhone 7 Plus.
From the first smartphone Vivo X20 has received an extended screen with ratio of 9:18 and still small bezels, and from the second device it got unique design of the back cover and main dual camera.
In general, in terms of design, Vivo always copied popular things from leading brands. It must be said that this has always brought the success. So, let’s look in details at new smartphones.
Seven reasons why Vivo X20 series will have success
Firstly, it is a big display that ocupies at least 80% of the front panel. It is the main trend on smartphone market, and now almost ever Chinese manufacturer released bezel-less device.
Secondly, this is a very powerful hardware, unlike most other Chinese bezel-less smartphones. If most Chinese smartphone are powered by budget chipsets from MediaTek, then all models of Vivo X20 works on very powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 660.
Thirdly, the smartphones have the face recognition function. At the moment only leaging companies, like Samsung, LG and Apple, offer this feature, but they are almost twice as expensive. Vivo offers the same features, but without overpaying for the brand.
Fourthly, Vivo X20 has a main camera, which is traditionally great from this manufacturer. It is dual and includes a pair of sensors with a resolution of 12MP and 5MP. The main module has high-aperture optics with aperture f/1.8 and fast phase autofocus.
Fifthly, it is a very good front camera. Yes, it is not dual, as some very advanced “selfie-phones” of Vivo itself, but it is equipped with 12-megapixel sensor with Dual-Pixel technology (hello Samsung) and a lens with f/2.0 aperture.
Sixth, it is a high-quality sound thanks to dedicated audio chips (they will be discussed later). All smartphones come with 3.5 mm jack for headphones, and it is located at the bottom to the left of USB port and microphone hole.
Seventh, it’s a thin and light metal body. The thickness of Vivo X20 is only 7.2 mm, and Vivo X20 Plus is 7.5 mm even despite 3900 mAh battery. The smartphones have slot for MiroSD.
So, unlike other competitors, like Samsung Galaxy S8 and Xiaomi Mi Mix, both Vivo X20 and Vivo X20 Plus have support for the latest version of Bluetooth 5.0, fast charging Qualcomm QuickCharge 3.0 and 4G LTE Category 12/13 networks.
Vivo X20 modifications and their features
The basic version differs with its display, based on Super AMOLED matrix with a diagonal of 6.01 inches and a resolution of FullHD+ 1080 × 2160 pixels. At the same time, thanks to a thin bezels, the smartphone’s dimensions are slightly larger than last year’s Vivo X7 with 5.2-inch display.
There is 4GB of RAM LPDDR4x @ 1866 MHz and 64GB UFS 2.1 built-in flash drive. As already mentioned above, there is a slot for microSD memory cards up to 256 Gb. The battery capacity is 3250 mAh, which is quite good and more than the same Galaxy S8.
Another feature of Vivo X20 is high-quality audio chip Hi-Fi AK4367A from Asahi Kasei, so the music playback will be very good. The price of Vivo X20 is around 2998 yuan (about $450).
Vivo X20 Plus
It is bigger version of Vivo X20. The diagonal of display is as much as 6.43 inches (even more than the Samsung Galaxy Note 8), and resolution is similar to Vivo X20. It is 1080 × 2160 pixels (FullHD +). The type of matrix is the same Super AMOLED.
There are no differences in terms of memory. But thanks to bigger body, there was a place for a decent battery of 3900 mAh. The sound is answered by dedicated ESS Saber ES9318 DAC, which has already been used in Vivo X9s and X9s + smartphones.
The price of Vivo X20 Plus is 3498 yuan ($524).
Vivo X20 Mars Edition
In fact, it’s not even a modification, but a special extended delivery package. At the time of writing an article, it was known for purely leaks. The photo (see below) shows a black suitcase with a large red M and a pair of mysterious accessories, one of which can be a branded Power Bank.
There are no informations about release date and price.
Another mysterious version, which has been caught some time in leaks from popular benchmarks like Geekbench. On August 14, 2017, it was certified by TENAA in China, while X20 Plus A was also seen with it at the same time, but no differences were found with the usual X20. On the official Vivo website, there is some information about it.
