AGM X3 REVIEW: Are IP68 and US military standard really protect rugged phone?

Each company starts from the bottom and does not become known to the whole world for a month. AGM was not an exception. The Chinese manufacturer released its first smartphone in 2016, but it has some success only in 2017. AGM X1 was the first smartphone, which makes the company popular. It was first shown at exhibition MWC 2017.

In fact, the company produces two series of mobile phones – X and A. This month, AGM announced new rugged smartphone called AGM X3.

AGM X3: Specifications

Many people think that rugged phones are not focused on performance. However, out hero breaks all stereotypes. Just look at this specifications list:

AGM X3: Performance

The most powerful processor from Qualcomm – Snapdragon 845 – is used in latest flagships of 2018. You will be surprised, but AGM X3 is also powered by Snapdragon 845. It scores about 27100 points in AnTuTu benchmark. The processor is built on two Krio kernels of the 3rd generation. In total, the chipset has eight cores combined into two clusters: in the upper one – 4×2.8 GHz Kryo 385, in the lower – 4×1.8 GHz Kryo 385. The processor is has 10-nanometer built technology. As for the graphics, there is Adreno 630 with a frequency of 710 MHz.

The interesting point is the memory of AGM X3. The smartphone will be available in 4 different configurations: 6/64, 8/64, 8/128, 8/256 GB of memory. The type of RAM is LPDDR4X. The RAM operates in two-channel mode, which allows it to work at higher transmission speeds. The frequency of RAM is 1866 megahertz. The internal memory is UFS 2.1, which allows the ROM to work with the maximum possible read and write speed. You can use microSD memory card to expend the internal storage.

The smartphone does not have 3.5 mm audio jack, so Bluetooth 5.0 version will be very useful. There is also NFC and Wi-Fi 802.11ac modules. Of course, you can use fingerprint scanner.

The device has IP68 rating. It means that the smartphone can withstand immersion under the water to a depth up to 1.5 meters (less than 30 minutes). AGM X3 is made according to the US military standard MIL-STD-810G. This standard is assigned to various telecommunications equipment, which is used in places of increased danger: mining, construction, military, aviation, etc. The standard says that new AGM phone must withstand external influences: temperature, moisture, vibration, shock and many others. The letter “G” in the name of the standard indicates a bias in protection from vibrations and shocks.

AGM X3 is equipped with TFT display with a diagonal of 5.99 inches. The screen resolution is 1080×260 pixels, while the aspect ratio is 18:9. The pixel density is 403 pixels per inch. The screen occupies about 68.05% of the front panel. Of course, it is not so suprising, because today there are many phones with 90% of screen to body ratio. However, it is very good result for rugged smartphone.

The screen is covered with high-impact glass Corning Gorilla Glass 5 (the latest version of this protective glass). For additional protection, diamond-like carbon coating technology was used.

The cameras are also great. AGM X3 is equipped with a dual rear camera with a resolution of 12 + 24 megapixels. The aperture of the main sensor is f/1.8, the aperture of the additional sensor is also f/1.8. The pixel size is 1.28 μm. All the necessary functions are present, nothing special has been added.

The video is recorded at 30 frames per second, and maximum resolution of 4K.

The front camera takes pictures with a resolution of 20 megapixels, and the lens aperture is f/2.0. It has a standard face recognition function.

4100mAh battery, the optimized hardware and special software provide really good battery life on a single charge. The power adapter output is 5V/2A. There is an effective technology of fast charging – Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0. Also it is possible to charge the phone with wireless charging.

AMG X3: Comparison with LG G7 ThinQ

It’s difficult to find a rugged smartphone with the same top-end specifications, as AGM X3. However, we decided to compare it with LG G7 ThinQ. Let’s looks at main specifications of these phones..

Both smartphones have IP68 rating. Also they are made according to the standard MIL-STD-810G. Both devices are powered by the same chipset Qualcomm Snapdragon 845. However, there is a big difference in RAM and internal memory. AMG X3 is equipped with 6GB or 8GB of RAM (depending on version), while LG G7 Thinq has only 4GB of RAM. The maximum amount of flash memory for AMG X3 is 256GB, and for LG G7 Thinq – 128GB.

The LG smartphone display is bigger and the resolution is also higher. The main camera of LG G7 Thinq will give better images in low light conditions, but both smartphones will surprise you with high-quality photos. The front camera of AMG X3 has much higher resolution, so you can expect better selfies from this phone.

Since both smartphones are powered by the same chipset, AGM X3 should have longer battery life because of bigger battery.

  • 8/128GB – $644.
