“Alive” skyscrapers help solve the food problem

According to the calculations of demographers in 2050 the world’s population will increase by another 3 billion people, many of whom will be living in numerous cities. In this regard, one of the most important will be the food problem.

Now imagine this scene: in the midst of the vast metropolis of skyscrapers towering unusual structure, very reminiscent of a tree made of glass and concrete, “crown” is filled with vertical gardens. They give the city cereals, fruits and vegetables – in a word, all the food, while providing more and clean air.

Authors of the project entitled «Dubbed Urban Skyfarm» – Aprilli Design Studio. It involves the creation of “live” skyscraper height of 160 meters with a total area of ​​1.5 million square meters. However, not all of the area is occupied by vegetation. Part of the area is for walking and recreation. The main method of growing food crops – hydroponics, in which instead of the traditional soil porous materials are used, for example, vermiculite or expanded clay.

At the bottom of this facility will be located food markets, processing plants and water facilities. And on the top will house an array of solar panels of 3200 square meters and wind turbines, which will provide the entire complex is fully cheap electricity.
