BlackView BV5500 Pro First REVIEW: $99 IP68 Rugged Smartphone of 2019

In early February 2019, Blackview released a new generation of rugged smartphone called BV5500. The smartphone was very affordable, but rather weak. The manufacturer has listened to customer reviews, and in April 2019 it introduced an improved version of its rugged smartphone – BlackView BV5500 Pro.

BlackView BV5500 Pro has received several big updates. First, the new smartphone has a more powerful Mediatek MT6739 processor, while the amount of RAM increased from 2GB to 3GB. Also, the smartphone runs on new version of operating system – Android 9.0 Pie. Despite these important improvements, the price is still the same – only $99.

Today we will make the first review of new Blackview BV5500 Pro rugged smartphone. As usual, we start with design of mobile device.

The design of new BV5500 Pro is no different from the previous version – Blackview BV5500. The case of the smartphone is made of rubber and metal. The mobile device comes in three color options: green, yellow and black. In fact, as you can see, only the strip on the front and rear panels changes. The main body of the smartphone is black in all color options.

Fortunately, modern rugged smartphones are bulky and ugly, as they were some years ago. BlackView BV5500 Pro has a high level of protection, but it still looks stylish and beautiful.

The dimensions of smartphone are 152.2 x 75.5 x 14 mm.

Most of the front panel takes 5.5-inch screen, which is protected by Gorilla Glass 3. IPS panel has a resolution of HD+ or 720 x 1440 pixels. The aspect ratio is 18:9. This is a nice, bright and clear display for a budget smartphone.

The bezels around the display are quite thick, but this is not surprising for rugged smartphone. There is front camera, earpiece and LED notification light on the top.

On the back rubberized panel you can see dual camera and flashlight. As you can see, there is no fingerprint scanner on the back. You also cannot find it on the side or front panel. The manufacturer refused the fingerprint scanner in Blackview BV5500 Pro. However, you can use face recognition function or key pattern.

Perhaps the weakest point of BV5500 Pro is the camera. On the back of the smartphone is the main sensor Sony IMX134 with a resolution of 8-megapixel and a secondary sensor of 0.3MP. As you understand, you should not count on high-quality images.

The front camera has 5 megapixel sensor.
