In early February 2019, Blackview released a new generation of rugged smartphone called BV5500. The smartphone was very affordable, but rather weak. The manufacturer has listened to customer reviews, and in April 2019 it introduced an improved version of its rugged smartphone – BlackView BV5500 Pro.
BlackView BV5500 Pro has received several big updates. First, the new smartphone has a more powerful Mediatek MT6739 processor, while the amount of RAM increased from 2GB to 3GB. Also, the smartphone runs on new version of operating system – Android 9.0 Pie. Despite these important improvements, the price is still the same – only $99.
Today we will make the first review of new Blackview BV5500 Pro rugged smartphone. As usual, we start with design of mobile device.
BlackView BV5500 Pro: Design
The design of new BV5500 Pro is no different from the previous version – Blackview BV5500. The case of the smartphone is made of rubber and metal. The mobile device comes in three color options: green, yellow and black. In fact, as you can see, only the strip on the front and rear panels changes. The main body of the smartphone is black in all color options.
Fortunately, modern rugged smartphones are bulky and ugly, as they were some years ago. BlackView BV5500 Pro has a high level of protection, but it still looks stylish and beautiful.
The dimensions of smartphone are 152.2 x 75.5 x 14 mm.
Most of the front panel takes 5.5-inch screen, which is protected by Gorilla Glass 3. IPS panel has a resolution of HD+ or 720 x 1440 pixels. The aspect ratio is 18:9. This is a nice, bright and clear display for a budget smartphone.
The bezels around the display are quite thick, but this is not surprising for rugged smartphone. There is front camera, earpiece and LED notification light on the top.
On the back rubberized panel you can see dual camera and flashlight. As you can see, there is no fingerprint scanner on the back. You also cannot find it on the side or front panel. The manufacturer refused the fingerprint scanner in Blackview BV5500 Pro. However, you can use face recognition function or key pattern.
As usual, there is a volume and power key the right side, while hybrid slot for memory card and SIM card is located on the left side.
USB-Type C port hasn’t gone anywhere; it is located on the bottom of smartphone. Also, there is speaker grilles next to the charging port.
Blackview BV5500 has 3.5 mm audio jack, which is located on the top. By the way, all ports and connectors are hidden under special rubber plugs to protect the phone from water and moisture.
BlackView BV5500 Pro: IP68 protection
Of course, the main feature of BlackView BV5500 Pro is IP68, IP69K and MIL-STD-810G ratings. The manufacturer says that these standards are used to protect equipment in US Army. It says about the high durability of BV5500 Pro smartphone.
According to the Chinese manufacturer, new smartphone is able to survive a fall from a high height, strikes, a jet of water under high pressure and immersion in water to a depth of 1.5 meters.
BlackView BV5500 Pro: Performance
Compared to the younger version BlackView BV5500, which is powered by MTK6580, the new BV5500 Pro has a more powerful MediaTek MT6739V processor. This is a quad-core chipset with a clock frequency of 1.5 GHz.
As we wrote earlier, the manufacturer has increased the amount of RAM up to 3GB. The amount of internal memory is the same – 16GB. Yes, it is quite small storage for the 2019 smartphone, but you can use an external microSD memory card up to 64GB.
Of course, Blackview BV5500 Pro smartphone is not designed for heavy games. On the other hand, it does an excellent job with everyday tasks.
The updated smartphone runs on new Android operating system 9.0 Pie. This is a multi language version with support of all Google applications, such as the Play Store, YouTube, Maps and others.
Unlike most other budget smartphones, BlackView BV5500 Pro is equipped with NFC for contactless payments.
BlackView BV5500 Pro: Camera
Perhaps the weakest point of BV5500 Pro is the camera. On the back of the smartphone is the main sensor Sony IMX134 with a resolution of 8-megapixel and a secondary sensor of 0.3MP. As you understand, you should not count on high-quality images.
The front camera has 5 megapixel sensor.
BlackView BV5500 Pro: Battery
The smartphone is equipped with a battery capacity of 4400mAh. The manufacturer claims that the singe charge is enough for 2-3 days of battery life. However, the smartphone lasts for about 1 day in talk mode.
Unfortunately, there is no fast charging function.
