We are interested in Huawei Y9 2018 for its four camera, FullView display and big battery. Of course, the price is also imporant for many people. Let’s start our review with design.
Huawei Y9 2018: Design
New Huawei smartphone looks very similar to Huawei Nova 2i. It comes with the same full screen 2.5D display and slightly curved corners.
The screen size is slightly larger than Nova 2i – from 5.9 inches to 5.93 inches (really small difference). The resolution is FHD+ (2160 x 1080 pixels). It is IPS panel, so the viewing angles are good.
Above the screen there is LED notification, a pair of 16MP + 2MP camera, conversation speakers and light sensor.
Now, let’s look at the back. The rear panel is made of metal. IT makes the smartphone very luxury and premium. However, there is bar on bottom, not metal like Nova 2i.
The rear camera is placed at the top left corner. There are two sensors and flashlight. This fingerprint scanner is located in the middle of backside.
The control buttons are placed on the right side. There are power and volume rocker, nothing special.
The left hand is SIM slot. The SIM tray is a 3 slot for both SIM cards and MicroSD memory card. The SIM tray supports dual 4G, but the standby time is 4G/2G.
The main connection ports are all in the bottom. There are 3.5 mm headphone jack, microUSB port, microphone and main speaker. Unfortunately, the smartphone doesn’t provide Type-C.
On top there is only a microphone for noise canceling.
The design of Huawei Y9 2018 is different from Nova 2i with camera sensors position, long screen and metal body. However, it is more comfortable to hold in hand, thanks to rounded edges and thin bezels around the screen.
Huawei Y9 2018 is available in three color options: black, blue and gold.

Huawei Y9 2018: Performance
We have no doubts that new Huawei phone is very powerful. If you don’t believe us, then here is AnTuTu result. Huawei Y9 2018 scores about 88478 points. It is very good for mid-range phone.
Huawei Y9 2018: OS and Software
Huawei Y9 2018 runs on Android Oreo 8.0 out of the box. Of course, there is own UI from Huawei called EMUI 8.0. It is the best and latest user interface from Huawei, which is also used on flagship phone Huawei Mate 10 Pro.
UI is not different from other Huawei mobile phones. By default App Drawer is not available, but you can turn it on through settings menu.
The Huawei Theme app allows you to customize themes, wallpapers, icons and others.
Phone Manager app is still available. It helps to speed up the phone, manage information about internet consumption, notifications, battery, etc.
Huawei Y9 2018 also has Motion Control. You can find all functions in Settings> Smart Assistance> Motion Control.
Huawei has very useful app called App Twin. It allows to duplicate the apps, for example, Facebook, Messenger, LINE or Whatsapp. So, you will have two icons on the main screen for two different accounts.
The fingerprint reader is still located on the back. It is comfortable and fast. After setting up fingerprint recognition, it takes a milliseconds to unlock the phone without having to wake up the screen.
If you do not want to use fingerprint reader, there is also face unlock function. It also works very fast. To unlock the phone, you just need to wake up the screen and then look on front camera. By the way, a lifehack especially for you: active the function “Raise to Wake” or double tap to wake up the screen, so you do not need to press the power button.
Huawei Y9 2018: Entertainment
Let’s talk a little about watching movies or listening to music on Huawei Y9 2018. The smartphone coems with 5.93 inches FullView display. It is great for watching movies or videos on YouTube. The 18:9 aspect ratio is not a problem, because YouTube provides to expand the video to to full screen.
As for the speaker, it is good for listening to music or watching movies. The sound comes out in the middle. If you listen via headphones, then Huawei Histen sound system adds basses and quality into the sound.
Huawei Y9 2018: Games
Some words about gaming. Although, the specifications of Huawei Y9 2018 are weaker, than Nova 2i, it has the same processor. We played popular games ROV and PUBG.
ROV allows to change to HD graphics, but we can not choose the frame. The frame rate in the game when playing is about 25-30fps can play. It may not be as smooth as on flagship, but still good.
As for PUBG, we can choose the frame rate at medium. The graphics allows to choose highest Balanced (by default it is Smooth). The frame rate falls when there are lot of scenes or driving fast.
Nevertheless, you can comfortably play heavy games on Huawei Y9 2018. Also we do not worry about battery, because it has a capacity of 4000mAh.
Huawei Y9 2018: Сamera
The smartphone has four cameras in total. The rear and front cameras are equipped with 2MP secondary sensors for bokeh effect. After testing the camera, we can say that Huawei Y9 2018 has real secondary cameras, unlike many budget phones.
Let’s start with the main camera. There are 13MP + 2MP camera with Wide Aperture mode and Portrait mode. What is the difference between these modes? Huawei’s Wide Aperture mode is used to clear the face after blurred. You can choose the blur level (from f/16 to f/0.95). The Portrait mode focuses on the main object, and after taking photo you can change the color of face, skin, make it beautiful, etc.
The sample photos from Wide Aperture and Portrait modes you can see above. We want to note that using wide aperture mode you should focus first and then adjust the blur. Using portrait mode, you just need to tap on screen to take a photo. The smartphone will automatically blur the background.
Here are sample photos in Auto mode. The image quality is impressive for mid-range phone. The contrast is good, but the color scheme is a little pink. In general, it looks very soft. We think it is OK.
Just like the main camera, the front camera with 16MP + 2MP sensors has Portrair mode. If you don’t choose the Portrait mode, then the smartphone will use 16 megapixel camera only.
AR Lens. The cool features added on Huawei Nova 2i, and now it is available on Huawei Y9 2018. AR Lens mode will change the background to the cartoon format or other fun scenes.
Huawei Y9 2018: Battery
Finally, the battery has a capacity of 4000 mAh. It is the same as flagship smartphone Huawei Mate 10 Pro. However, Huawei Y9 2018 has weaker hardware, so the battery life should be longer.
From our experience, while playing games like ROV and PUBG, we charged the phone 1-2 times a day. If you don’t use the smartphone with heavy loads, then the battery life will be up to 2 days.
Unfortunately, the battery does not support fast charging system called SuperCharge, so you will have to wait about 3 hours until full charge.
Huawei Y9 2018 is one of the most affordable smartphones on the market. It has elegant design, FullView FHD+ display, beautiful design, good performance and interesting cameras. Especially I want to highlight the front camera with Portrait mode.
The price of Huawei Y9 2018 is only $249.99, so I have only one question – what are you waiting for?
- FullView FHD+ display is beautiful.
- 4 cameras work amazing.
- Android 8.0 Oreo.
- 4000 mAh battery.
- Fingerprint reader and face unlock.
- Support for 2 SIM and MicroSD cards at the same time.
- Great value
- SuperCharge is not supported.
- The back camera is slightly scratched.
