Mediatek Helio A22 REVIEW: The Best Processor For Ultra-Budget Smartphones

The market of mobile processors is divided between two manufacturers. Some brands produce its own chipsets, such as Samsung, Apple and Huawei. All the rest phone manufacturers use processors from Mediatek and Qualcomm.

The American semiconductor giant is now leader of the market. It has good budget, mid-range and flagship chipsets for different phones. As for Mediatek, it does not feel bad in budget segment. It is because the MediaTek processors are cheaper than Qualcomm chipsets. Nevertheless, practice shows that users prefer American chips to Taiwanese ones.

It is difficult not to agree with the opinion of most people, because it is fairly objective. But recently Mediatek decided to change the market with the release of new processors.

Moreover, the smartphones Xiaomi Redmi 6 and 6A are already working on the new processor Mediatek Helio A22 and P22. So, today we want to speak about Helio A22. Is it good for 2018? Can you play latest games on smartphones with Helio A22 chipsets? Let’s find out.

Mediatek Helio A22: Features

What is Mediatek Helio A22? The new super-cheap processor from the Taiwanese manufacturer is based on four energy-efficient Cortex-A53 cores with a maximum clock speed of up to 2 GHz. The two cores are really energy efficient, since Helio A22 is made by 12-nanometer process. In addition, it monitors the level of performance and energy consumption with new smart technology called Mediatek CorePilot.

MediaTek CorePilotTM

MediaTek CorePilotTM is a new technology that allows you to increase the working time of your smartphone and its performance. You can use the smartphone all day for standard tasks only: to call, read mail or social networks. However, it can also greatly discharge the battery. Why? Because a modern smartphone does not always know how to correctly distribute the load, and even for the simplest application, the system sometimes allocates maximum CPU resources.

CorePilot technology will help with this. It maximizes the correct way to distribute the load between the processor cores and the graphics system, giving priority to the processor’s power to more demanding applications and reducing the load and core frequencies when nothing powerful on the smartphone is launched, saving the charge. Thanks to CorePilot 3.0 technology, a smartphone can run about 30 percent longer and show 10-15 percent better performance compared to devices without it.

To communicate with the outside world, Helio A22 has a modem with support for 4E LTE Cat.7 networks, as well as Bluetooth 5-th version, support for GPS, GLONASS, Beidou and Galileo, FM-radio. For home Internet there is a Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac 2.4 GHz.

MediaTek Helio A22 allows the smartphones to have dual main cameras with maximum resolution of 13 MP + 8 MP, or single photo sensor with a resolution of 21 MP.

The new chipset from MediaTek is also equipped with a variety of technologies, among which is artificial intelligence. It helps smartphones to easily recognize the faces of the owners with the help of Face ID, and also adjusts order in photo albums.

Mediatek Helio A22: Comparison with Snapdragon 425

Now we want to compare Helio A22 with Snapdragon 425. Qualcomm processor is also designed for budget devices up to $90. So, the main advantages of new processor are: the frequency of cores, the type of memory and the graphics core.

To begin with, the frequency of Snapdragon 425 cores is only 1.3 GHz, while Helio A22 has 2 GHz. The second – Helio A22 will receive the operational memory of the standard LPDDR4X with a frequency of up to 1600 MHz. Snapdragon 425 has only LPDDR3 and 933 MHz. Finally, PowerVR GE is much faster than the old Adreno 308.

As a result, Helio A22 is more powerful than Snapdragon 425 by 30% in terms of processor and as much as 72% of the graphics. It’s no surprise that Xiaomi, when choosing the chipset for Redmi 6 and 6A, choosed Helio A22 and P22.
