The U.S. military has found a way to control lightning

The new laser system will allow people with high precision direct lightning in predefined locations.

Scientists from the University of Arizona have developed a new type of laser that can send rays in the atmosphere far beyond what was previously possible. Development is so far only a prototype and only works in the laboratory. Nevertheless, it can be used to literally control the lightning. In practice, and for peaceful purposes, it can be used as a perfect lightning rod.

When such a laser “shoots”, it leaves in its path “plasma trail.” Lightning strikes, the appearance will beat it in this track, so that in practice this means that a method is “forcing” a lightning strike at a predetermined location.

Before sending laser beams such a long distance was not possible, because they quickly dissipated and lost focus. The basis of the new technology is put very simple principle. Beam with high intensity laser beam like “implement” in a bun with a lower. When “inner” beam passes through air, the “external” beam “recharges” it, giving sufficient energy to reach its destination. In laboratory tests, scientists were able in this way to increase tenfold the distance traveled by the beam. This means that the more powerful laser systems can safely “dostrelivat” to the atmosphere. And helps to control lightning.

 

It is noteworthy that the project funded by the U.S. Defense Department. Apparently the military wants to turn the development into a powerful weapon. Indeed, it is possible to oppose the incredible force of natural disaster?
